Leonard Bernstein - Mahler: Des Knaben Wunderhorn SICC-1528. She is the best thing on this album. Overall, this is a good but not great Wunderhorn cycle. George Szell, Pierre Boulez and of course Bernstein's '69 recording are much better if you are interested in this music. But no harm in getting this one too, anyway. Bernstein had his say in this song cycle in NY with Christa Ludwig and Walter Berry in top form. This DG remake some years later finds Andreas Schmidt in gorgeous voice, and he does the best job with Bernstein's tempi, now eccentrically slow by any measure. Lucia Popp's lyric-colorature soprano had darkened with age, and she sounds too mature and vocally unsure much of the time, wonderful artist though she is.

The songs of Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy’s Magic Horn) by Gustav Mahler are voice-and-piano and orchestral settings of German folk poems chosen from a collection of the same name assembled by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano and published by them, in heavily redacted form, between 1805 and 1808. Ten songs set for soprano or baritone and orchestra were first published by Mahler as a cycle in 1905. but in total 12 orchestral songs exist, and a similar number of songs for voice and piano.

Because anyone who cares about the terrible costs of war, and the suffering it engenders, must hear the pain, anger, love, bitter irony, and eloquence that Mahler invested in his settings of songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn (Youth's Magic Horn. And because Ludwig (b. 1928) and Berry (1929–2000), who join Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic on the first cycle, and Fischer-Dieskau (1925–2012), who joins Bernstein on piano on the second, are some of the most expressive and wondrously voiced singers of the late mono and earlier stereo era, and in their absolute prime in 1968. Bernstein's conducting is breathtaking precisely because he understands everything Mahler wrote as an expression of tortured genius.
