The Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90, commonly known as the Italian, is an orchestral symphony written by German composer Felix Mendelssohn. The work has its origins (as had the composer's Scottish 3rd Symphony and The Hebrides overture) in the tour of Europe which occupied Mendelssohn from 1829 to 1831.

At two separate times, Felix Mendelssohn composed music for William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream (in German Ein Sommernachtstraum). First in 1826, near the start of his career, he wrote a concert overture (Op. 21). Later, in 1842, only a few years before his death, he wrote incidental music (Op. 61) for a production of the play, into which he incorporated the existing Overture. The incidental music includes the world-famous Wedding March.

Symphony No. 90, MWV N16 "Italian". I. Allegro vivace Felix Mendelssohn; Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra; Volker Hartung. 2. II. Andante con moto Felix Mendelssohn; Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra; Volker Hartung. Inspired by the German composer's Grand Tour to Italy in the 1820s and 30s, the symphony's pictorial spirit is matched by the excitement of the famous incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, performed by the Cologne musicians with drama. 48 kHz, 24-bit PCM – JPK Musik Studio Masters. Felix Mendelssohn. Along the way, Mendelssohn conducted the London premiere of his Midsummer Night’s Dream overture and visited the sites in Scotland, like Holyrood Abbey and Fingal’s Cave on the island of Staffa, which would inspire the Hebrides Overture and his Third Symphony. While still working on these pieces, he traveled to Italy, which he managed to portray in music much faster, producing the Symphony No. 4 Italian by 1833, while the Scottish Third Symphony would have to wait until 1842.
