Distortion is the eighth studio album by American indie pop band The Magnetic Fields. It was released on January 15, 2008 on Nonesuch Records. As the album's title implies, several of the musical performances featured are distorted by various means. In particular, the album's sound was influenced by the 1985 album Psychocandy by The Jesus and Mary Chain. Distortion was recorded at Mother West in New York City. It was produced by Stephin Merritt and co-produced by Charles Newman.

Stephin Merritt celebrates all that is fuzzy, sexy, and drenched in reverb on Distortion, a 13-track rendering of the Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy through the barbed sieve of the Magnetic Fields mastermind's seemingly endless notebook of relationship dos and don'ts and self-effacing cognitive therapy sessions.

The Magnetic Fields: Distortion. Distortion’, MF’s eighth album, archly twists the tale once more. Just as Glasvegas grab the scree-infested Wall Of Sound baton from The Raveonettes and race off into the Glasgow tenement estates chasing the last child support cheque, ‘Distortion’ finds Merritt (in a nod to his more noise-friendly early albums) making everything from cello to acoustic piano feed back in an attempt to out-Mary Chain the Mary Chain, swathing the entire. record in a white noise shimmer and thus scooping off another slice of the zeitgeist
The Magnetic Fields, Distortion. On Distortion, Merritt's history-worship goes nuclear. These 13 songs are intended to revive the essential spirit of the Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy, the 1985 album whose mix of wailing feedback, rumbling menace and Phil Spector-esque pop aesthetics endeared it to mid-1980s John Peel listeners in much the same way that the Clash's first album soundtracked the lives of punk rockers.
Distortion is hardly a retread, though- its fuzzy production substantially alters the focus and nature of Merritt's music. Opener "Three Way" serves as a straightforward statement of purpose; its simple, surf-y riff is almost unimaginable without a distorted guitar tone. Throughout Distortion, the squelching, tight-focus rhythmic interplay of Merritt's music is blown out into loud, distorted drum beats and smeared guitars, introducing a new level of messy, energizing depth to Merritt's characteristically stately and considered songwriting. While the sonic treatment of Distortion flatters Merritt's singing, the album's greatest moments belong to Shirley Simms, the finest and most nuanced singer in Merritt's orbit. Drive On, Driver" brings to mind The Charm of the Highway Strip with its serpentine melody and roadway imagery.
