Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood. The third studio meeting in nearly 17 years between Medeski, Martin & Wood and guitarist John Scofield has no easy referent to their earlier recordings - purposely. This quartet sounds like a real band on Juice, which is a mixed blessing. The positive aspect is that this longtime collaboration creates near instinctive communication. This is a much more inside date, though the rhythmic interplay between bassist Chris Wood and drummer Billy Martin is outstanding throughout. There are four covers from the 1960s scattered among the various originals; some work better than others.

Medeski Martin & Wood (or MMW) is an American avant-jazz-funk band formed in 1991, consisting of John Medeski on keyboards, Billy Martin on drums, and Chris Wood on bass. The band is influenced by musical traditions including funk and hip hop and is known for an unconventional style sometimes described as "avant-groove". MMW has found moderate mainstream success, often working with guitarist John Scofield and touring on the jam band circuit.

Album · 2014 · 10 Songs. There was 2006’s Out Louder and a 2011 live album. Now the spigot has been turned on again for this fully collaborative project. Groove is the name of the game here, and the funk is slathered on thick for Eddie Henderson’s Sham Time and North London. The band almost sound like a late-'60s Blue Note jazz band on Louis the Shoplifter, with Medeski pounding out rhythms on piano as Scofield solos. They take it way out for the effects-driven Juicy Lucy, the sinister samba of Stovetop, and the more dissonant Helium. Of the covers, Light My Fire is surprisingly straight, while the.

Juice opens with a buoyant rendition of Eddie Harris' soul jazz classic "Sham Time," establishing the date's celebratory mood and sense of camaraderie from the start, fortified by Scofield's bluesy lyricism, the shimmering warmth of Medeski's vintage analog keyboards, Wood's supple contributions and Martin's shuffling backbeats. Their rhapsodic interpretation of The Doors' "Light My Fire" on the other hand, builds from lite funk to an electrifying climax (courtesy of Scofield's progressively heated fretwork), but it's the psychedelic dub deconstruction of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" that is the most impressively reimagined of the three. Considering its winning combination of tuneful melodies, danceable rhythms and earthy textures, Juice is Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood's most appealing, cohesive and consistently engaging release to date.

As Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood's third studio release, "Juice" offers a fresh batch of songs. While "A Go Go" stands as one of the all-time greatest Jazz/Rock projects, "Out Louder" was a long-awaited and much appreciated sequel that let us hear this supergroup stretch out. In this context, "Juice" can be thought of as a progressive extension of "Out Louder. This album builds excitement for the upcoming tour when we'll get to hear this material live. Juice" delivers more of the sonic wonder that we've come to expect from Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood. 17 people found this helpful.

Jazz guitar star John Scofield dips back into a string-bending funk-blues bag in this fourth collaboration with jamband godfathers Medeski, Martin & Wood. Keyboardist John Medeski switches from organ to piano on the cool Latin-tinged swinger Louis the Shoplifter by drummer Billy Martin
