Massard made many recordings, the two most famous being Faust, opposite Joan Sutherland, Franco Corelli, Nicolai Ghiaurov, and Carmen, opposite Maria Callas, Nicolai Gedda and Andréa Guiot, with Georges Prêtre conducting. Robert Massard was also active as a teacher at the Conservatoire de musique of Bordeaux. Alain Pâris, Dictionnaire des interprètes et de l'interprétation musicale au XX siècle (2 vols), Ed.

Maria Callas, Georges Prêtre. Maria Callas never sang Carmen on-stage, but the role seems custom-made for her strengths - Carmen is fiery, volatile, infuriating, seductive - and Callas is such a superb singing actress that she conveys the character's complexity with rare effectiveness. The critical acclaim and public affection for Callas' Carmen put it very high on any list of preferred versions of the opera. She has a terrific supporting cast, including Nicolai Gedda who is in excellent voice and who makes a believable, tragic Don José, a performance that has been deemed among the finest of his career.

Georges Bizet's "Carmen" actually puts the heroine on stage much less than other operas with a strong lead female. In Verdi's "La Traviata" and, even more, Richard Strauss' "Salome", the heroines spend all or a majority of the opera on stage, dominating the action and the music. The 1964 Callas "Carmen" may be the world's most famous opera recording. In a performance that has entered the realm of myth, Callas is well-paired with a very dramatic Nicolai Gedda, who offers an interpretation of Don Jose close artistically to Callas'. Additionally, I found the Micaela in this set, sung by the Parisian soprano Andrea Guiot, very good.

Bizet: Carmen (1964 - Prêtre) - Callas Remastered Maria Callas. Booklet for Bizet: Carmen (1964 - Prêtre) - Callas Remastered. With Georges Prêtre, one of her favoured conductors, and the ever-stylish Nicolai Gedda as her Don José, she captured every facet of the role. Andréa Guiot is a sweet Micaëla, and the rest of the cast is strong. Georges Prêtre leads l'Orchestre du Théâtre Nationale de l'Opéra and the Choeurs René Duclos in an exciting, idiomatic reading of the opera. EMI's sound is clean and present.
