Downing Street can be found close to Cenotaph on White Hall. The street was named after Sir George Downing (1625 – 1684). Since the ruling of Margaret Thatcher, the street has been closed to the public, tough security measures are being taken, and policemen stand guard over the place round the clock.

David Downing is a contemporary British author of mystery novels and nonfiction. He is known for his "convincing" depiction of World War II and Berlin, probably due to his studies and familiarity with the subject. He has written a series of espionage thrillers, based around Anglo-American character John Russell exploring Germany in the 1940s.

10 Downing Street, also known colloquially in the United Kingdom simply as Number 10, is (along with the adjoining Cabinet Office at 70 Whitehall) the headquarters of the Government of the United Kingdom and the official residence and office of the First Lord of the Treasury, a post which, for much of the 18th and 19th centuries and invariably since 1905, has been held by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Downing describes the mud, the rats, the constant pounding of the guns, the deaths, the futility, but also the humour and the heroism of one of the most compelling periods in world history. His writing is spare but vivid, and presents a graphic description of an ordinary person's struggle to survive. Walter Downing was a Melbourne law student before fighting on the Western Front, where he won the Military Medal.
