On the high-profile end, such stellar players and bandleaders as Shorty Rogers and Shelly Manne contribute tasty sides, while the obscure quotient is nicely covered by Eddie Safrinski. This album has some laid back, 'cool' tracks to be sure, but there are some fiery, hard driving tracks that would have made Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers proud. What you are getting is nearly an hour of great 50s jazz. Putting a label on it only diminishes the value and enjoyment.

West Coast jazz refers to styles of jazz that developed in Los Angeles and San Francisco during the 1950s. West Coast jazz is often seen as a subgenre of cool jazz, which consisted of a calmer style than bebop or hard bop. The music relied relatively more on composition and arrangement than on the individually improvised playing of other jazz styles. Although this style dominated, it wasn't the only form of jazz heard on the American West Coast.
