Fritz Reiner's friendship with Béla Bartók must be considered an important factor in the creation of these legendary recordings. Koussevitsky's famous commission for the Concerto for orchestra was due in large part to Reiner's advocacy, and he was among the first conductors to both perform and record this masterpiece. Beyond this, Reiner's great sympathy for his friend's work extends to the care and attention to detail he gave to the works included here. For all its virtuosity, the concerto is structurally symphonic, and Reiner ensures that the music formally coheres. Music for Strings, Percussion & Celesta, Sz. 106, BB 114. 6.

I had read about the Concerto for orchestra Fritz Reiner did with the Chicago Symphony in 1955 for a long time and finally got around to listening to it. I found that it lived up to expectations. All three pieces found here receive outstanding performances, making for a highly worthwhile disc – a classic in the good sense. Reiner’s interpretation involves choices and his Concerto and Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste accentuates certain dimensions of the pieces, while less focused on things like textural effects. This interpretation is without doubt by far the best ever recorded of these Bartok pieces, especially the Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. I doubt whether it will ever be surpassed. And also the sound is perfect.

The Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, perhaps surprisingly, triumphs because of Reiner’s affinity with the more interior moments. Thus the first movement (andante tranquillo) is a peaceful unravelling where Reiner’s control of dynamics is all; the Adagio third movement gives off a miraculous stillness; some conductors get lost in the harmonic maze here. Chicago III, another double album, was ready for release at the start of 1971, and it just missed hitting number one while giving the band a third gold (and later platinum) LP. Its singles did not reach the Top Ten, however, and Columbia again reached back, releasing 'Beginnings' (from the first album) backed with 'Colour My World' (from the second) to give Chicago its fourth Top Ten single.
