The Best of Both Worlds is the second greatest hits album by American hard rock band Van Halen, released on July 20, 2004 on Warner Bros. The compilation features material recorded with lead vocalists David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar, but omitting Gary Cherone's three-year tenure with the band. Prior to The Best of Both Worlds' release, Hagar reunited with Van Halen, and the band subsequently recorded three new tracks to include on the release.

But that's hard to appreciate on Best of Both Worlds, when the Dave and Sammy tunes are mixed up with no regard for chronological, musical, or emotional cohesiveness.

When you think about it, musically Van Halen are above reproach. In the 1970's, they were without equal. That factor alone makes The Best Of Both Worlds a struggle to listen to. There seems to be a notable effort to downplay David Lee Roth’s contributions in favor of Sammy Hagar’s overall. By song selection, on paper this album looks good. The wasted CD space could have been used to give this album a more well-rounded feel, covering Van Halen’s whole career. The compilation covers 1978-1995, and then skips ahead to 2004 with the three new songs. Excluded are cool singles from the lost period, like Me Wise Magic, Humans Being and Without You (from Van Halen 3 with Gary Cherone). Or, they could have just put more classic David Lee Roth tracks on there, since the album’s a bit Sam-heavy.

Van Halen got the 1990s off to a very strong start with For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, their third album with Sammy Hagar at the helm. Van Halen were a fairly established hard rock band when they cut Women and Children First in late 1979, so they felt free to craft a heavier album lacking any covers. The result is a killer disc of originals that contains immortal classics like "Everybody Wants Some!!" and "And the Cradle Will Rock. It was the perfect way to kick off the 1980s.
