Nomad Songs is the 23rd studio album by the German world musician Stephan Micus. The album was released in June 2015 through ECM Records. Like all of his albums, it was produced by Micus himself, unlike most of the other records on the ECM label, which are produced by label boss Manfred Eicher. Stephan Micus is always seeking to find new traditional instruments. He learned their history and how to play. Then he composes new music and plays all of these traditional instruments on albums.

On all of his recordings he has relentlessly sought to expand his musical universe by digging deeply into the sounds, traditions, and instruments of other cultures, often traveling great distances to study with masters of certain kinds of instruments. He never tries to replicate them but instead has sought to create new music from his discoveries.

Panagia is Stephan Micus’ 20th album for ECM, and it coincides with his 60th birthday in January 2013. The Greek word Panagia is one of the names of the Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ. Stephan Micus’ album takes six Byzantine Greek prayers and sets them in his own inimitable way with instruments he has collected in years of travels round the world.
