With huge hooks suitably stripped down and sharp production, and an infectious abundance of hometown pride, the Bay Area's hyphy movement took over the urban party just as the South's crunk sound began to wear out its welcome somewhere in the middle of 2006. Coming from a label as big as TVT, Hyphy Hitz is a surprisingly aware collection, covering enough of the big names and adding the proper amount of underground heat to be considered informed. Hyphy Hitz also awkwardly shoehorns great rappers into the movement; Balance is best known as the Bay's mixtape king, who has worked hard to end up on tapes all over the country alongside heavyweights like 50 Cent, but his contribution to hyphy, "Grind" is pretty bland. The term hyphy (/ˈhaɪfiː/ HY-fee) is Oakland slang meaning "hyperactive". More specifically, it is an adjective describing the hip hop music and the culture associated with the area. The term was first coined by Oakland rapper Keak da Sneak. The hyphy culture emerged in the late 1990s in Oakland before rising to prominence throughout the wider Bay Area in the early 2000s. It is distinguished by gritty, pounding rhythms, and has been compared to crunk music.
