Gonjasufi – Callus (2016). Posted by NewAlbumReleases. net On August - 19 - 2016.
Gonjasufi's Callus is an album that's disorienting at its catchiest, harrowing at its ugliest, and more than willing to run both of those modes at the same time. Jay Z’s Nickels and Dimes might have lifted the hook from the Gonjasufi cut of the (almost) same name, but its mournfully introspective spirit was something too bare-nerved to co-opt, the catharsis of M. Z. LE pared it down to just the psych- and laid bare just how many far more unsettling things could be attached to it as a. suffix. Callus is deliberately abrasive proof of this: an album that’s disorienting at its catchiest, harrowing at its ugliest, and more than willing to run both of those modes at the same time.
Gonjasufi - Callus Calluses form on parts of the body that are subjected to stress, labour or fracture. They're marks of experience and trauma, mounds of skin made thicker and harder to protect the softer flesh underneath. American artist Sumach Ecks is surely familiar with calluses, both physical and emotional, and his voice seems callused, too. It's a pained, weathered cry, the sound of a life of ups and downs. After releasing a few EPs and being sampled by Jay-Z, Ecks returns six years later with a follow-up album.
Callus (Cass, Album, Ltd). UK, Europe & US. 2016.
Album opener ‘Your Maker’ is gloriously dark, setting the tone for a record that Gonjasufi says America needs to fucking hear. Lo-fi and grungey, his emotional message is sung through heavy distortion and drone. Callus delivers its overt message in a highly original, dark-instrumental style against noise and drone. Fuzz, heavy bass and electro synth are juxtaposed alongside Gonjasufi’s own impressive playing of guitar, drums and piano. Pearl Thomson, formerly of The Cure, also appears on tracks such as ‘The Kill’ helping to tie together some of Callus’s deliberate chaos.
