If I remember correctly, this EP was originally supposed to be released on Poland’s Pagan Records but seems like it didn’t happen. Of Spells of Darkness and Death features all the metal tracks from the Journey into Horizons Lost demo and two new ambient pieces plus one renamed track from JIHL. The music is hateful, vampiric and lycantrophic black metal with an extremely raw and trebly sound. The sound is similar to Sorath's Horns of the Goat EP (Baron’s previous band) but a bit thinner and with less audible drums. Took me quite a while to get into this due to the sound but once you get used to it you can make out the details. The metal tracks are in the vein of Sorath and Black Funeral’s Vampyr – Throne of the Beast album, perhaps a bit more Nordic sounding though, so if you like those releases you’ll like this stuff too.

This album is as much of a journey into the occult as a journey into a time when black metal actually gave me the shivers. Ancient Spells of Darkness and Obscured by lunar rites have different paces, the first, crafted in an epic and slow-paced doomish tone, and the second, a bit faster, murky and cavernous, overall the best way to close the album after the Interlude. I imagine that the reception of this album is being quite positive, and that NWN did a great move into giving this band an apportunity. It was a win-win situation.

Dark Funeral is a Swedish black metal band from Stockholm, founded by guitarists Blackmoon and Lord Ahriman in 1993. They emerged during the second wave of black metal. Their lyrical themes have traditionally pertained to Satanism and anti-Christianity. Certain past and present members including Blackmoon, Ahriman, Caligula and Chaq Mol have each declared an affinity for Satanism, with Ahriman and Caligula notably being practitioners of LaVeyan Satanism.
