Autoamerican is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Blondie. It was released in November 1980 and reached No. 3 in the UK charts, No. 7 in the US, and No. 8 in Australia. The album was a radical departure for the band, with opening track "Europa" setting the pace. The track is a dramatic instrumental overture featuring orchestral arrangements and ending with vocalist Debbie Harry declaiming a passage about automobile culture over an electronic soundtrack

A cover of Jamaican group the Paragons' "The Tide Is High," released in advance of the album, became a gold-selling number one single, as did the rap pastiche "Rapture," but, despite their presence, the album stalled in the lower half of the Top Ten and spent fewer weeks in the charts than either of its predecessors.

Autoamerican" is the crème de la crème of Blondie albums. Autoamerican" is in a league of its own, and I find challenging to describe the different sounds, but I'll do my best. First off, guitarist Chris Stein decided he wanted an orchestra on many of the tracks. Which is evident on the instrumental track, "Europa". I actually would have been happy to get the "Best Of Blondie" album instead which has the 2 outstanding tracks from this album on it except that inexplicably the album version of "Rapture" is not on that album! As a guitarist, what made "Rapture" so great for me was Stein's playing on the solo which you only get in full in the album version.

Blondie's fifth album, Autoamerican, marked a major change in musical direction. It may not have continued the ongoing success of the band's first four albums, but it was still fairly decent by anybody's standards. After Eat to the beat, Blondie could have gone several ways, but not in the way that any die-hard fan of the band or indeed anyone who listened to the major radio stations would have thought.
