Californian Caine plays a modern jazz trumpet with discernible influences (Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Woody Shaw, Miles Davis). The music ranges from mainstream to Afro-Cuban jazz, from Art Blakey to Tito Puente style. Caine leads a (mainly) sextet of peers: Chuck Manning (tenor sax), David Ralicke (baritone sax), Justin Reinhardt (piano), Bill Markus (bass), Willie McNeil (drums), and on loan from Poncho Sanchez for four tracks, percussionist Ramon Banda. Drummer Larance Marable (from Charlie Haden Quartet West) guests on two cuts.

To a certain extent, the music on trumpeter Elliott Caine's CD is reminiscent of Lee Morgan, Blue Note, and the hard bop/soul-jazz scene of the mid- to late '60s. But that said, the results are far from derivative. Caine uses a core sextet that includes tenor saxophonist Michael Rose, baritonist Peter Aplanalp, pianist Justin Reinhardt, Trevor Ware or Bill Markus on bass, and drummer Joel Alpers plus some guests to perform new hard bop originals, three Afro-Cuban jams, and a few tender ballads. Caine has an appealing sound and a relaxed style, taking his time as he gets his message across.

The Elliott Caine Quintet/Sextet: Inspired by '60's "Blue Note" style jazz, as well as by the music of Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaria, The Elliott Caine Sextet plays original compositions, as well as the works of Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Donald Byrd, et al. The group's critically acclaimed first release, "Orientation", has received generous radio airplay across the USA, being the "1 Most Added" for jazz, nationally, for the week of 11/5-11/11/99, eventually reaching 29 on national radio's Gavin Jazz List in January 2000.

Elliott Caine, arranger, composer and trumpet player, is a Los Angeles musician who has performed with Teddy Edwards, Larance Marable, Al McKibbon, Ernie Andrews, The Machito Orchestra, Bobby Matos, Jump With Joey, Wycliff Jean, Beck, and numerous other notables. Elliott has toured the US, Europe and Japan, and has performed on live television and radio throughout the world.

Sextet is the third album by English band A Certain Ratio, released in 1982 by record label Factory. It is the first album by the band not to be produced by Martin Hannett. The album spent eleven weeks in the UK Independent Chart, peaking at number 1. The album generally received critical acclaim.
