The Walkmen recorded 13 songs for their latest album in five days in August 2009 with John Congleton and Chris Zane. They had been playing several of the songs since the summer of 2009. They recorded "something like 28 songs," but included only 11 on the album. In support of the new album, the Walkmen performed at All Tomorrow Parties in May 2010, Lollapalooza in early August 2010, and the Reading and Leeds Festivals at the end of August 2010. Lisbon was released on September 14, 2010 on label Fat Possum records.

Lisbon is the sixth studio album by New York-based group The Walkmen, released on September 14, 2010 in the US. John Congleton produced and engineered the album. The band recorded nearly thirty tracks before settling on the eleven tracks that comprise the album. The album is a tribute to the city of Lisbon in Portugal. Exclaim! named Lisbon as the No. 13 Pop & Rock Album of 2010. Pitchfork named it the No. 21 in their Top 50 Albums of 2010.

The Walkmen are kings of dejection. For about a decade now, they've turned their albums into symphonies of disappointment and resentment and regret. Their proudest moments, then, are also their most down-and-out. He's sad and pathetic and needy and yet somehow still smooth, which is sort of the central animating paradox at the heart of the Walkmen. They make these wounded, anxious songs, but they make them so confidently, with such unearthly rich-guy assurance. The band's specific style of indie rock is very rooted in a scrappy, scratchy New York tradition that dates back to the Velvet Underground or Bob Dylan, but their take on it is theirs and theirs alone. You know one of their songs right away when those winding, circular guitars and surging drums and gargling vocals kick in.

Produced by The Walkmen. But the life we lead came gradually Who keeps the time? A bitter lime, will do us fine To kill the taste. We'll turn deaf ears on all that we don’t wanna hear But a cause for travel has come again At this early hour, I'll tell your wife a story She looks outside and doubles over laughing
