Sacred Steel is a musical style and African-American gospel tradition that developed in a group of related Pentecostal churches in the 1930s. The Church of the Living God, the Pillar and Ground of the Truth, was founded in 1903 by Mary Magdalena Lewis Tate. Following her death in 1930, the church divided into three branches, known as the Keith, Jewell and Lewis dominions

Thanks to Arhoolie Records' sacred steel series, we now get to hear one of the least publicized, most fascinating forms of gospel music around: the electric-lap and pedal-steel-guitar playing found in House of God churches across the United States. Influenced by Hawaiian music, blues, R&B, and loaded with soul, this is gospel like you've never heard before. Willie Eason's "Take Your Burden to the Lord" may lack the guitar pyrotechnics of the Campbell boys but its message is just as touching. If you like your gospel charged with y and figuratively-this is a must-have disc. And, though no small task, it's arguably the most awe inspiring of the entire Sacred Steel collection.

The electric lap steel guitar has been the instrument of choice in both the Jewel Dominion and Keith Dominions (both African-American churches) since the late '30s, replacing the traditional church organist. This collection showcases the pioneering work of five of its best known and most influential sacred steel practitioners: Willie Eason, Sonny Treadway, Glenn Lee, Henry Nelson, and his son, Aubrey Ghent.

Presenting detailed portraits of musical pioneers such as brothers Troman and Willie Eason and contemporary masters such as Chuck Campbell, Glenn Lee, and Robert Randolph, Stone expertly outlines the fundamental tensions between sacred steel musicians and church hierarchy. Sacred Steel music has only crossed over to a wider audience in the last 10 years. and the story of the feel-good music is covered in depth in the new entertaining book Sacred Steel. -In The Groove, Steve Ramm. Easy-to-read yet scholarly examination of this arrestingly unique sacred music tradition.
