Malmö Symphony Orchestra Orchestra, Andrey Boreyko Conductor, Jörgen Svensson Orchestra Leader. Bloch: Symphony in E-Flat Major, Macbeth, 3 Jewish Poems and In Memoriam. Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Ernest Bloch: Deux Psaumes; Suite hébraïque; Baal-Shem; Trois poèmes juifs. Deutsches Symphony Orchestra, Berlin.

Bloch: Violin Concerto; Poems Of The Sea; Suite symphonique. The most striking features of this release are the physical sound and exceptional level of performance Dalia Sternberg gets out of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The sound is bright and sharp without being tinny. Praise for this goes to Maestro Sternberg. She seems to have a feel for this music (the Three Jewish Poems will have you melt in your chair), and she gets just the right folk-music touches without allowing the music to become maudlin. The highlight here is the stately Symphony in E-flat. It is much less based on Jewish themes, but still tonal.

Alban Berg composed his Three Pieces for Orchestra (German – Drei Orchesterstücke), Op. 6, between 1913 and 1915. They are dedicated "to my teacher and friend Arnold Schoenberg in immeasurable gratitude and love". The three pieces are: Präludium (Prelude). An instrumentally colourful, impressionistic prelude.

From Jewish Life: Prayer. Baal Shem: Three Pictures of Chassidic Life: III. Simchas Torah. Baal Shem: Three Pictures of Chassidic Life: II. Nigun. Baal Shem: Three Pictures of Chassidic Life: I. Vidui. Avodath Hakodesh: V. Fugue, Allegro. His mature works, including his best-known pieces, often draw on Jewish liturgical and folk music. These works include Schelomo (1916) for cello and orchestra, the Israel Symphony (1916), Baal Shem for violin and piano (1923, later version for violin and orchestra) and Avodath Hakodesh (Sacred Service, 1933) for baritone, choir, and orchestra. Ernest Bloch (1880–1959) was a Swiss composer.

Notes

"The Songs were written in 1951 . . and first appeared on Columbia 12" LP-ML4919, coupled with the Three Pictures. Intersting, there was originally a fifth song, entitled "The Little Black Boy", but it reflected the blatantly anti-black sentiments of Blake's time and was therefore deleted at the time of CRI's reissue (SRD 398) from with this CD is drawn."

"The 'Three Portraits' were originally released as 'Five Portraits' on Columbia 10" LP ML 2087. The LP contained the additional 'The Percussion Piece' and 'Cantabile for Strings'. These were arbitrarily chosen anyway and not a 'suite' as such, but drawn from Thomson's 'over 100 portraits' as described above [earlier in the notes]"

"Ernest Bloch's '3 Jewish Poems' was, like the Philadelphia Orchestra Thomson pieces, recorded monaurally in the early 1950's. Part of the pioneering 'American Recording Society' series of 'only' recordings of American composer repertoire, this recording was reissue in the early 1960's on Desto LP 409."

[Note -- the CD does not make it clear which Thomson pieces were conducted by Ormandy and which were conducted by Thomson -- thus I have left the general Track 1-10 in place for both of them as conductors. A review in Fanfare magazine (classical music review magazine) clarified that Ormandy conducted the Songs & Pictures, while the Portraits were conducted by Thomson. If I can find the exact reference in Fanfare (issue date, etc.), then I will update this entry appropriately.]
