But when Mark Morgan's guitar slices through, and Jon Lockie's hybrid electro-acoustic drums lock in, the song becomes a tense, turgid combination of minimalist structure and maximalist sound. It's a mix the band perfected on their previous effort, 2007's Through the Panama, even producing a few catchy post-punk gems. All the melting of echoey distance and full-on volume makes City of Straw a complex listen, but the album does contain a few bright, clear moments. On "Weehawken" and especially closer "Sky Above Mud Below", the band sculpts churning dissonance into rock shapes via Morgan's repetitive chants, Lockie's rolling rhythms, and the fluid bass of Richard Hoffman- always the backbone of their sturdy attack.

By most reasonable standards, the eight songs comprising City of Straw are off-putting blasts of mongrel noise.

City of Straw is the first Sightings record since 2007’s Through the Panama, and it’s an awesome document of a band exercising its hard-earned, insular synergy with a sense of decision more threatening than the stickiest noise blast one could conjure. On every track here, each of the individual players in Sightings is a force to be reckoned with. Morgan handles his tsunamic guitar squall with a surprising, painterly grace and an excellent sense of timing, while his vocals reel with a classic, drunken swagger that burns with malignancy. Above all, however, Sightings are capable of conducting an energy that transcends their individual accomplishments. When they rock, on tracks like Jabber Queens and Saccharine Traps, they work up such careening momentum it might seem as though they were losing control if they weren’t able to stop on a dime, break down, and then explode again on a whim.

Their upcoming seventh album, City Of Straw (due April 13 on Brah Records) is easily their most expansive, pumping hollowed-out punk rock dirges as if they were transmissions from scrambled porn channels, all fuzz, static, and pulse-defying hiccups. Produced by Oneida’s Kid Millions and Shahin Motia (full disclosure: two of my brahs), Sightings are starting to sound like a full-on rock band.
