The "Piano Concerto" (1984) is a long piece in three movements, grand in its proportions. Unlike many piano concertos, such as Schnittke's and Carter's, it does not cast the piano as an individual fighting the orchestral mob. Rather, there's great symbiosis between the two. Lieberson seems to celebrate the physical aspect of piano performance, and among other concertos I can compare it only to the one Esa-Pekka Salonen unveiled earlier this year.
