What makes the Atlas Moth so successful isn't their ability to draw an all-encompassing pool of influences into their sound, but their ability to get those elements to coalesce into something greater than the sum if its parts, and that's exactly what the band has done on An Ache for the Distance. From the very opening moments of "Coffin Varnish," the album immediately surges forth into a frenzied dirge that takes full advantage of the band's three-guitar attack  . With a real combination of thoughtful craftsmanship and genuine movement, An Ache for the Distance is an album that doesn't just instantly engage the listener, but also stands up to repeated visits, making for one of the more intense and rewarding post-metal albums to emerge out of the post-Isis landscape.

The Atlas Moth are a five-piece sludge/post metal band from Chicago. They employ a captivating atmosphere filled with melodic guitar riffs, sometimes taking on a triple guitar attack as well as subtle synths. The main emphasis on this album is the interplay between the guitars providing a haunting atmosphere. The rhythm section is very strong as well, maintaining steady head bobbing rhythms that are subject to time changes here and there, making the music very interesting. The subtle ways the rhythm and melody weave in an out, such as the 3:50 mark on the song "25s and Royal Blues. These subtle changes are quite engaging and almost trance inducing. Their is also a healthy mix of clean and unclean vocals.
