This is the first Boys of the Lough album. The original LP sleeve notes record that initial sessions had already taken place by March 1972 including guitarist Mike Whellans, at that time regularly working in a duo with Aly Bain as well as part of the Boys. Whellans left to be replaced by Dick Gaughan and the album was re-recorded from scratch in a short time; original partial contributor Lindsay Porteous (jaw harp, mouthbow) was not included in the new sessions.

Aly Bain MBE (born 15 May 1946 in Lerwick, Shetland, Scotland) is a reknowned Shetland fiddler, learning his instrument from the old-time master Tom Anderson. Considered one of the finest fiddlers in the Scottish tradition, he became nationally prominent as a founding member of Boys of the Lough, with whom he played for 30 years. Aly teamed up with Mike quite soon after moving to the mainland from Shetland. Aly of course was the Shetland fiddler, steeped in that tradition, but also with a liking for other fiddling styles as well. Mike is one of the most versatile musicians ever from Scotland. His main thing would be called "Americana" these days - he’s one of the best blues-harp players on the planet - and his "one man band" sets, using vocals, blues-harp, guitar and drum, are astonishing.

The Boys of the Lough is a Scottish-Irish Celtic music band active since the 1970s. Their first album, called Boys of the Lough (1972) consisted of Aly Bain (fiddle), Cathal McConnell (flute), Dick Gaughan (vocals and guitar) and Robin Morton (bodhran and vocals). Since the 1960s the Forrest Hill Bar in Edinburgh had been a centre for folk singers and instrumentalists.

Mike Whellans is one of Scotland's top flatpicking guitarists. A former member of the Scots-Irish band Boys of the Lough, and an ex-duo partner of the group's fiddler Aly Bain, Whellans has reinvente. ead Full Biography.

Aly & Mike, Tivoli, 1970's In the early 1970s, Mike was a member of the traditional Scots-Irish band, Boys of the Lough, and worked in a duo with fellow-Boy Aly Bain for about three years, playing amazingly clean and crisp flat-pick guitar behind Aly's fiddle; a very dynamic duo! In the 1980's and 90's, Mike then moved to live in Denmark and toured all over Scandinavia and in Germany and the Low Countries, as well as working back in the UK with those madcap Scottish musos, The Vindscreen Vipers Skiffle Group (Tich Frier, Bill Nolan, Malky McCormack and the late Danny K. .
