Badlands is a concept album, following a rather similar ideology revolving Halsey’s first EP, Room 93. In an interview with Complex, Halsey explained her storytelling abilities and what she strived to achieve with her LP: Every song I write is autobiographical and is about people, and that’s one of the things that gets complicated. You have to decide where’s your place as a songwriter. I hate limiting myself, and I hate censoring myself, but every now and then, I’ll write a line and be like, Oh no, I can’t do that. But, I pushed it a little far with that with Badlands.

Of course, it's clear from the start of Badlands that keeping her mouth shut is the last thing Halsey plans to do. As she proclaims on the taut, slow-tempo jam "Hold Me Down," "My demons are begging me to open up my mouth. Thankfully, Halsey consistently brings a strong sense of self to her content at every turn, musing with blithe emotion about her sexuality and creative independence. She also has a knack for singling out little generational touchstones that lend her songs an anthemic quality.
