Les Paul and Mary Ford were a popular 1950s husband-and-wife guitar duo in which Les Paul played lead guitar and Mary Ford sang. In 1951 alone, they sold six million records. The couple were introduced to each other by Gene Autry in 1946 and were married on December 31, 1949. They first appeared in the pop charts in 1950. Between the years 1950 and 1954, Les Paul and Mary Ford had 16 top-ten hits. They had five top-ten hits within nine months.
Showcasing Les Paul’s dazzling flights of fancy and Mary Ford’s warmth and feeling as a singer, Les And Mary captured the duo at a watershed moment in 1955. In the 50s, Les Paul and Mary Ford had 16 N. hits, including ‘How High the Moon’. They sold more than six million records in all and had their own radio and television shows. The album, released in April 1955, brilliantly captures the range of their repertoire. There were also six instrumentals on the album: ‘Turista’; the jazz ragtime classic ‘Twelfth Street Rag’; ‘Moritat’ (the theme for The Threepenny Opera, which is also the melody for ‘Mack The Knife’); and the Jimmy McHugh classic ‘On The Sunny Side Of the Street’ (with background humming that sounds like cooing).
Les Paul & Mary Ford still are my happiest musical memories of the 1950s, and that includes Rock & Roll. Mary Ford was THE most underrated singer of the 1950s, thanks to Les Paul's relentless attidute to marriage (see the biography) otherwise, given the right exposure, apart from being a fine guitarist in her own right, she could easily have been a fine jazz/torch singer in the Peggy Lee/Kay Starr mould. also, not many people realize a lot of the rhythm guitar in their songs was played by Mary herself--This cd is also a wonderful introduction into Les's playing style-often Mary is.
