William Larkin (early 1580s – 1619) was an English painter active from 1609 until his death in 1619, known for his iconic portraits of members of the court of James I of England which capture in brilliant detail the opulent layering of textiles, embroidery, lace, and jewellery characteristic of fashion in the Jacobean era, as well as representing numerous fine examples of oriental carpets in Renaissance painting.

For more poetry analyses, see Great poetry explained: an index to my blogs ) Philip Larkin (1922-85) was arguably the finest poet to emerge in post-war Britain, as evidenced by the huge interest still shown in his work, and the offer of the Poet Laureateship that was made to him in 1984 (which he declined). After graduating from Oxford University in 1943 Larkin became a librarian, and from 1950 to 1955 was sub-librarian at Queen's University, Belfast. It was while he was there that he met and had a brief love affair with a young assistant librarian named Winifred Arnott.

Filles de Kilimanjaro (French for "Girls of Kilimanjaro") is a studio album by American jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. It was recorded in June and September 1968. The album was released in the United Kingdom by Columbia (CBS) in 1968 and in the United States in February 1969. The album is a transitional work for Davis, who was shifting stylistically from acoustic recordings with his second "great" quintet to his "electric" period

In 1946, Larkin discovered the poetry of Thomas Hardy and became a great admirer of his poetry, learning from Hardy how to make the commonplace and often dreary details of his life the basis for extremely tough, unsparing, and memorable poems.

A summary of a classic Larkin poem Readers not fond of swearing in poetry are advised to look away now, for Philip Larkin's opening lines can get pretty sweary. They f ck you up, your mum and dad’: a memorable opening line for one of Philip Larkin’s best-known poems, ‘This Be The Verse’, not exactly a laudatory paean to parenthood. But what is Larkin’s poem actually saying, and why did he feel the need to write it? The following analysis attempts some answers to these questions. Under the wide and starry sky, Dig the grave and let me die. Glad did I live and gladly die, And I laid me down with a will. This be the verse you grave for me: Here lies where he longed to be; Home is the sailor, home from the sea, And the hunter home from the hill.
