Prins combines radio and television static with electronics and percussion to create seven tracks of layered noise. The results are relentlessly irritating, though surprisingly effective.

The German label Grob released Gert-Jan Prins's Live CD at the same time it released Keith Rowe's solo album Harsh. Funny thing is: Prins' one is harsher. More of an electrician than a musician (that is by no mean demeaning, it simply describes his work better), Prins works with self-made instruments dealing with signal conversion (optical TV signals to acoustic ones), radios, and TVs. His art resides in circuitry and manipulation as much as in interpretation and improvisation. He could be heard among the other musicians of the Music in Movement Electronic Orchestra (or MIMEO),.

Born 1961 in Ijmuiden, Netherlands, Gert-Jan Prins has been known for twenty years as one of the most challenging Dutch sound artists and established himself as one of the central performers on European improvised electronics scene. His unique self-developed live-electronics make use of radio and transmitter technology and create sounds with great physical energy. Starting off as a rock drummer, Prins continued as an improviser, later re-emerging as a master of self-made electronic machines in the mid-90's.

Jan uary 1, 1961 (age 58). Biography. Even though he has been active on the Dutch improvised music scene since the mid-'80s, Gert-Jan Prins got noticed in avant-garde circles only in the late '90s through his involvement in MIMEO ( Music in Movement Electronic Orchestra ) and the release of his solo album, Live, on the influential German label Grob. Like Lionel Marchetti and Xavier Charles, he owes his reputation as a live improviser more than anything else to his unusual gear.
