Lars Ulrich said that the band wanted to try something new with the idea of a ballad on this song with heavy verses and melodic choruses instead of their standard melodic verses and heavy choruses.

The screenplay of Unforgiven was written by David Web Peoples, who debuted with the screenplay of Blade Runner in 1982. In that same period of the early eighties, David Web Peoples had already written the script for Unforgiven. It would take 10 years before his script got made into a movie. This is a reference to late directors Sergio Leone (who directed Clint Eastwood in the Dollars trilogy) and Don Siegel (who directed Eastwood in Dirty Harry and Escape from Alcatraz).
