The album experimented with different styles, such as "Thousand Knives" and "The End of Asia"-in which electronic music was fused with traditional Japanese music-while "Grasshoppers" is a more minimalistic piano song. Sakamoto later composed Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor (1987), which earned him the Academy Award with fellow composers David Byrne and Cong Su.
Cong Su’s contribution to the soundtrack album comprises just one cue – Lunch – but there is much more of his music in the film; Su was basically responsible for writing all the period-specific Chinese source music one hears in and around the imperial palace during Pu Yi’s childhood. Most of it sounds much like Lunch, which is a soft, quiet, intimate piece for a number of Chinese folk instruments, including a dizi flute, a pipa lute, a guzheng, various metallic percussion items, and the ubiquitous erhu. It’s very authentic sounding, and has a calming, peaceful tone. Virgin Records 0777-7-86029-2-7 (1987). Music composed and arranged by Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Byrne, and Cong Su. Conducted by Gavin Wright. Additional arrangements and programming by Hans Zimmer, Hiro Sugawara, Koji Ueno, Lau Hong Quan and Yuji Nomi. Recorded and mixed by Steve Nye and Ian Sylvester.
Ex-Talking Head David Byrne and actor/composer Ryuichi Sakamoto (who co-starred in the film) each get a side of this beautiful score to Bernardo Bertolucci's Academy Award-winning film, and each took home Oscars and Grammys for their efforts.
