Head above water (4/5). I think it was a good choice to name the album after this song, since it summarizes the whole spirit of it: an album of self-discovery. Another power ballad. A realization of freedom. That kinda of love that gets you locked in a cage, until the moment you realize you want to be free, like a bird and fly away from it. Lavigne's voice in the chorus sounds a little bit softer, which I like. I Fell in love with the devil (5/5).

Indeed, many of the songs on Lavigne’s sixth studio LP were written during her prolonged illness and reflect a real maturation, deepened life experience, and honest soul-baring (make what you will of the album’s artwork).

Lavigne might not have found a musical identity that truly becomes her, but Head Above Water is an effective, and occasionally affecting, album. 50.
