Residentie Orkest The Hague demonstrates that symphonic music can still be meaningful to diverse audiences in the 21st century. From the summer of 2021 Anja Bihlmaier will be the Chief Conductor of Residentie Orkest The Hague. Bihlmaier is the successor to Nicholas Collon who is then, after five years, moving to the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The renowned conductor Jun Märkl has been appointed as Principal Guest Conductor.

Het Residentie Orkest (literal translation, The Residence Orchestra; known also in English as The Hague Philharmonic) is a Dutch orchestra based in The Hague. Since 2015, its primary (temporary) venue is the Zuiderstrandtheater in Scheveningen. Henri Viotta founded the orchestra in 1904. Its early home was the Gebouw voor Kunsten en Wetenschappen (K & W). The orchestra received its first acclaim during the 1911 Richard Strauss Festival, in which the composer himself conducted some of his works

Quite a few performances of Handel's Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks have been done on historical instruments, but this one by French conductor Hervé Niquet and his ensemble Le Concert Spirituel confidently bills itself as the "first historical version," with the claim justified by reference to "original instrumentation and tuning. The whole thing is quite an ambitious rethinking of the work, partly undertaken to mark the 15th anniversary of Le Concert Spirituel (everybody gets together and sings "Joyeux Anniversaire" at the end).

The Residentie Orkest ((The Hague Philharmonic Orchestra)) was founded in 1904 by Dr Henri Viotta, who was also the first conductor. The orchestra experienced its first great successes during the Richard Strauss Festival in 1911. In 1915, the Residentie Orchestra took over the renowned Kurzaal Concerts in Scheveningen from the Lamoureux Orchestra. Composer/conductors such as Pierre Boulez and Bruno Maderna were amongst the established guest artists. During this period, the Residentie Orchestra undertook major tours, where the venues included New York, Boston, Chicago, Vienna, Munich and Berlin. In the 1980's, Hans Vonk continued this policy with tours to the important American concert halls as well as to Vienna, London and Berlin.
