1] a second album, Looking at Ourselves, appeared in November The Crocodiles. The Crocodiles evolved from The Spats, under the mentorship of US producer Kim Fowley, and were founded in 1979 in Auckland with Backhouse, Dasent, Flaws, Lawrence and Mark Hornibrook on bass guitar and songwriter Arthur Baysting. The lineup was finalised with Morris joining as lead singer In April 1980 they released their debut album, Tears (produced by Glyn Tucker Jnr), together with the single, "Tears"
When Fane Flaws formed The Crocodiles in 1979, his unpredictable energies were already well known. He started out as a Wellington design student in the early 70s, but his career had taken a detour. Tears was also the name of The Crocodiles’ first album, released the same year. The arrangements were detailed and playful.
The Crocodiles gigged in Auckland and also performed at the 1980 Sweetwaters Festival, which ironically was the event that the Wide Mouthed Frogs last played together. An album called "Tears" was released in 1980 and from it the title track was released as a single. It and the album both reached number 17 on the national charts. Bruno Lawrence once again decided that this sort of music was not his style and he left the group, to be replaced by Ian Gilroy of the Whizz Kids. He did however continue to provide additional material for their second album. This was called "Looking At Ourselves" and released in November 1980. 1980 saw the group pick up a number of awards, Top Group, Most Promising Group and Song Of The Year for "Tears". In December 1980, the group lost Ian Gilroy to the Swingers, and shortly after Dasent and Matthews called it a day.
Tears is New Zealand pop group The Crocodiles's first album. Both the album and title track were released in April 1980. Both reached on the New Zealand album and singles charts respectively that year. The band's second single, "Whatcha Gonna Do", however wasn't as successful, failing to chart. The Crocodiles is best known as an early band of Jenny Morris, who went on to considerable success as a solo artist in Australia. Founding members of The Crocodiles were Fane Flaws, Peter Dasent, Tony Backhouse, Arthur Baysting, Jenny Morris, Tina Mathews, and Bruno Lawrence. They were managed by Mike Chunn. The band went through a number of lineups, including members such as Ian Gilroy.
