Sir Herbert James Stanley KCMG KStJ (25 July 1872 – 5 June 1955) was a leading British administrator, who served at different times as Governor of Northern Rhodesia, Ceylon and Southern Rhodesia. Born in England, Stanley was educated at Eton College and Balliol College, Oxford, and worked in the foreign service in Dresden and Coburg before serving as the Resident Commissioner for Southern and Northern Rhodesia from 1911 to 1914.

The 17th century is a period, which many English historians and literary scholars prefer to any other. During most of it England had her own course both in her political and literary life. My initial impression of the Guild was not terribly inspiring; indeed, a more dreary collection of fellows could not be imagined, by me at least, although Dickens did at times come close. Although never a ‘secret society’, the persecution it had received during the nineteenth century, combined with indifference throughout the twentieth, had caused the Guild of Funerary Violinists to become a deeply secretive organisation over the years.

But 18th-century theatres offered much more than what audiences saw on stage: sites for socialising and catching up with the latest news and gossip, they were places to see and be seen, no matter your social class. And although Georgian playwrights are comparatively neglected these days – with a small handful of exceptions – the great actors of the age, among them David Garrick, ‘Peg’ Woffington and Sarah Siddons, have gone down in history. Whereas 17th-century indoor theatres were intimate spaces, their Georgian successors were much larger, especially in London, and the scale of staging increased accordingly, with greater emphasis on impressive visual effects.
