Fool's Mate is the debut solo album by Peter Hammill of progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator. The title is both a chess and tarot reference. It was produced by Trident Studios' in-house producer John Anthony. The album was recorded in 1971, in the midst of one of Van der Graaf Generator's most prolific periods

Fool's Mate" was Peter Hammill's first solo album, it was recorded between the albums "H To He Who Am The Only One" and "Pawn Hearts". Peter himself says VDGG were not going to record these songs for one of their albums, even though they had done demos of them, and played them live. Yet Peter says these songs had a certain validity about them, even if they were fairly light-weight for the most part.
