Ultraviolence is the third studio album and second major-label studio album by Lana Del Rey. It was officially released on June 13, 2014, by Universal Music Group. After having commercial success with her first major-label album, Born to Die, Del Rey re-released it accompanied by a standalone EP, Paradise, in late 2012. Del Rey presumably began working on her second around this time. She was photographed in a recording studio on January 27, 2013 in Los Angeles, California.

The return of the queen of melancholy, Ultraviolence which is Del Rey's second major album release (but third overall) is really just a rehash of what made "Born to Die" so great. That being said it doesn't diminish Ultraviolence in the slightlest, if it's even more possible she sounds more detached and emotionless than she did on "Born to Die".

Follow-up album Ultraviolence shifts gears considerably, building a thick, slow-moving atmosphere with its languid songs and opulent arrangements. Gone are the big beats and glossy production that resulted in tracks like "Summertime Sadness. Instead, Ultraviolence begins with the protracted, rolling melancholia of "Cruel World," nearly seven minutes of what feels like a sad, reverb-drenched daydream. The song sets the stage for the rest of the album, which simmers with a haunted, yearning feeling but never boils over.
