In the City is the debut studio album by British mod revival band the Jam. Released in 1977 upon Polydor Records, the album reached No. 20 in the UK Albums Chart. The album features the band's debut single and title track "In the City".

In the City was the debut single by English mod revival/punk rock band The Jam from their album of the same title. It was released on 29 April 1977 and reached No. 40 on the UK Singles Chart in May 1977, making it their first Top 40 single and the beginning of their streak of 18 consecutive Top 40 singles. On their debut, the Jam offered a good balance between the forward-looking, "destroy everything" aggression of punk with a certain reverence for '60s beat and R&B. In an era that preached attitude over musicianship, the Jam bettered the competition with good pop sense, strong melodies, and plenty of hooks that compromised none of punk's ideals or energy, plus youth. culture themes and an abrasive, ferocious attack.

French copyright wording on ridge around edge after runout

The single was re-issued in 1982 (alongside all the other Jam singles when they split). The back sleeve still has flip back folds that go straight up to the opening edge but are diagonally cut on the opposite end as they were originally. The original flipback folds a can be seen in the back fold print.
The opening of the sleeve is curved cut. The original release straight cut can be seen on the reproduction back sleeve.
