Hypnotic Eye is the thirteenth and final studio album by American rock band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, released on July 29, 2014, by Reprise Records. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, becoming the only Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album ever to top the chart. Hypnotic Eye was nominated for the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album

What prevents Hypnotic Eye from sliding into the arena of soft, desperate nostalgia is a combination of muscle and savvy, a combination that gives the album a strong infrastructure - Petty strips his songs to the bone; they're so lean they feel as if they clock in at two minutes, even if they run twice that long - and a. sonic wallop.

I was not disappointed. Hypnotic Eye is full of energy, great lyrics, and stand out songs. The album sounds a lot like their first couple of albums, as well as the 2008 Mudcrutch release. Mike Campbell, guitarist of the Heartbreakers, stands out here. Very impressed with this album, and it gets better with repeated listens, as there is a lot of musical and lyrical depth here. It is hard to believe that this is TP&HB first album.

After a nearly 37-year wait, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers earn their first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200. The band's new Hypnotic Eye arrives atop the chart, selling 131,000 copies in the week ending Aug. 3, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's the best debut sales week for Petty since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991, and his best sales frame overall (debut or otherwise) since 1994, when his solo album Wildflowers sold 161,000 in the week after Christmas. Sales for Hypnotic Eyewere aided by an album promotion with Petty's current concert tour. Customers who bought a ticket to Petty's shows had the option of also receiving the album as part of their purchase. Only albums that were redeemed by the consumer count as sales toward Billboard's charts.

Nearly 40 years in, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are beyond the point of needing to give a shit. Yet the amount of heart and soul on their latest album, Hypnotic Eye, is clear. The consummate rock 'n' roll rebel, Petty once declared bankruptcy to be released from a recording contract. Later he fought his own label over a planned price increase for 1981's Hard Promises. A modern throwback, Hypnotic Eye recalls the band's early Shelter Records releases. After the heavy-handed blues of Mojo, Hypnotic Eye is unabashed rock 'n' roll. The charging "Forgotten Man" is classic Petty. Even with its sense of purpose made clear, there is no urgency on the part of the Heartbreakers.

Talk about Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Hypnotic Eye

SING
Great album, acceptable pressing if you can get it cheap. There are some ticks and pops even after two cycles thru the spin clean. Nothing serious or repetitive, but I don't know why it's so hard to make a good piece of vinyl.

Hypnotic Eye is a simmering slow-burner’s delight ... like a fuse that never really leads to explosion, merely inching across the canyon floor sparking out eleven tracks of rockin’ blues, punctuated by tasty understated guitar solos, and compelling songs filled with enough lyrical wonder to set you comfortably back in your chair and hold you there until the very last note has been floated off into the velvet backdrop of a moonlit night.Sadly, this album will never be played live, as it’s actually awash with hypnotic bliss, filled with unexpected layering, light years from Tom’s jukebox favorites, and a splendid adventure as we settle into the intoxication of a warm summer, when these songs, strung together with a couple of others such as “Don’t Pull Me Over” and “Pirate’s Cove” from Mojo, would make for a perfect outdoor event under the stars.Regardless, drag a speaker out onto the deck, dust off that canvas lawn chair, mix yourself a romantic concoction, and let The Heartbreakers expand your universe.Review by Jenell Kesler

He played quite a few from this album on his last tour. 2015
