Theodore DeReese "Teddy" Pendergrass (March 26th, 1950 – January 13th, 2010) was an American singer. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he initially rose to musical fame as the lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. After leaving the group over monetary disputes in 1976, Pendergrass launched a successful solo career under the Philadelphia International label, releasing five consecutive platinum albums, then a record for an African-American R&B artist

Teddy Pendergrass is the debut solo album from the American R&B/soul singer, Teddy Pendergrass. It did well for a debut album, reaching on the US Billboard 200 and on the Billboard R&B album chart. Two singles were released: "I Don't Love You Anymore"; and "The Whole Town's Laughing at Me", reaching pop & R&B; and R&B respectively. All tracks composed by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff; except where indicated.

Pendergrass' career was suspended after a car crash in March 1982 that left him paralyzed from the chest down.

Pendergrass' career began when he was a drummer for The Cadillacs, who soon merged with fellow soul band Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. After a stellar early 70s run including the Grammy-nominated hit If You Don't Know Me by Now, Teddy went solo in 1976.
