Oxbow have been a metal band, one steadily moving into more credibly frightening territory. At this point, one can scarcely identify them with traditional metal's canned, often hokey menace, as The Narcotic Story fully embraces a sort of slow-burning, infernal blues. It's a malign transmission, sparser than Oxbow's more metallic styles, and, paradoxically, much heavier. After establishing its extreme poles with a brief intro of piercing ambient tones and heavy-bowelled bleats, The Narcotic Story sustains a deft balance between creeping dirges and panicky rock for its duration
The Narcotic Story is the sixth record by Oxbow, released on June 19, 2007, by Hydra Head Records. The press release for the album offers some insight to its production and overall theme: There is change.
Avant-garde rock fans that have yet to discover the dark drama of Oxbow will likely soon join the coterie. With a number of albums under their belt (featuring studio mentorship provided by the notorious Steve Albini), the band enlisted Joe Chiccarelli (Frank Zappa) to co-produce THE NARCOTIC STORY (2007). The album's sludgy yet melodically thoughtful songs and intricate metal musings paint a challenging soundscape of hopeless beauty.
The first album from Oxbow, Fuckfest, was released in 1989. In May 2017 Oxbow released Thin Black Duke their seventh full-length album, like The Narcotic Story produced by Joe Chiccarelli and Niko Wenner and again on Hydra Head Records, to critical acclaim.

This album plays off of emotions, with a overtly passionate lyricist who at times sounds like Tom Waits just gargled a mouthful of thumb tacks, and time signatures reminiscent of classic rock at it's best. Oxbows' latest album is "Noise Rock" at it's best and easily one of the best releases of the year. 6 people found this helpful.
