Machu Picchu is a 15th century Inca citadel, located in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru, on a 2,430-metre (7,970 ft) mountain ridge. It is located in the Cusco Region, Urubamba Province, Machupicchu District, above the Sacred Valley, which is 80 kilometres (50 mi) northwest of Cuzco and through which the Urubamba River flows, cutting through the Cordillera and creating a canyon with a tropical mountain climate.
Next morning we took a train to Machu Picchu. By the way, curiously enough there are two types of trains on route: Cusco - Ollyanta - Machu Picchu: one type for locals, and one for tourists (not sure if it is true for the rest of the country though). Meaning if you are a foreigner, you won't be able to purchase a local train ticket. It's definitely something to keep in mind when planning a trip. The train arrives to a little town located at the bottom of the canyon. One can reach the ancient ruins by a long tiring hike, or by a tourist bus. There are no taxicabs here

We spend two days up at the site at Macchu Picchu and if we had to do it over again we would do it in a day: - First, hike Huayna Picchu first thing in the morning while it's cool. Second, spend a leisurely rest of the day visiting the Macchu Picchu ruins, which can easily be done in several hours. Then, take the late train back to Ollantaytambo. With the extra day, we would have spent more time in Ollantaytambo.
