Many confuse the Township of Newland with Newland Town in Avery County, North Carolina. In 1960 he composed and recorded the album We Insist! (subtitled Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite), with vocals by his then-wife Abbey Lincoln and lyrics by Oscar Brown J. after being invited to contribute to commemorations of the hundredth anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. In 1962, he recorded the album Money Jungle, a collaboration with Mingus and Duke Ellington. One of these groups was "The Double Quartet", featuring his regular performing quartet with the same personnel as above, except Tyrone Brown replaced Hill.

The Max Roach Double Quartet, which combined the drummer's regular group (comprised of trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, tenor saxophonist Odean Pope and electric bassist Tyrone Brown) with The Uptown String Quartet, was a perfect match, and its few recordings are all quite enjoyable and occasionally wondrous. In addition to a transcription of Scott Joplin's "Easy Winners" for the strings, this superior release has colorfully arranged versions of works by Bridgewater ("Birds Says"), Pope ("Sis") and Roach ("A Little Booker")
