Murder on the Orient Express is a 1974 British-American mystery film directed by Sidney Lumet, produced by John Brabourne and Richard B. Goodwin, and based on the 1934 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie. The film features the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot (Albert Finney), who is asked to investigate the murder of an American business tycoon aboard the Orient Express train.
Unexpectedly returning to England from Istanbul, famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirot finds himself traveling on the Orient Express. One of the passengers informs Poirot that he has been receiving anonymous threats and asks Poirot to act as his bodyguard. Poirot declines but when he is found the next morning stabbed to death, it is apparent that the threats he received were very real. As Poirot begins to question the dozen or so passengers on the train, he realizes that several of them have a connection and he begins to form a solution to a very complex crime. Genre: Drama, Crime, Mystery
Sidney Lumet directed an all-star cast, built around Albert Finney’s fascinating portrayal of Christie’s famous Belgian sleuth, Hercule Poirot. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards (winning a Best Supporting Actress statuette for Ingrid Bergman) and ten BAFTA Awards (winning two acting awards and the Anthony Asquith Award for Richard Rodney Bennett’s extraordinary score). His elegant and glamorous music for Murder on the Orient Express spotlights two remarkable themes: a posh, 1930s-style piano-based main title and a sophisticated, melodious waltz. Emphasizing style over menace (but not lacking in the latter), Bennett’s score was often cited as one of his finest contributions to the genre.
Richard Rodney Bennett's score for the Sidney Lumet adaptation of Agatha Christie's whodunit Murder on the Orient Express is a complicated, varied orchestral work reflecting the shifting tones and large cast of characters in the movie. Things are always changing in the music, just as they do onscreen, as viewers try to make sense out of the unusually broad panorama of suspects investigated by master detective Hercule Poirot on a snowbound train in Yugoslavia in the 1930s.
Directed by Sidney Lumet. With Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery. In December 1935, when his train is stopped by deep snow, detective Hercule Poirot is called on to solve a murder that occurred in his car the night before. Director: Sidney Lumet. Writer: Paul Dehn (screenplay by).
Sidney Lumet was directing, even though his agent didn’t want him to. She called it the dumb train movie. She wanted him to work in Los Angeles, but he didn’t like it there. Were there any divas? No, they were well behaved, although Lauren Bacall insisted on having her shoes made in Paris, Albert Finney got paid more because his Hercule Poirot had most of the lines, and Sean Connery got a percentage because he was such a big star. He was so flattering. There is no such thing as a small part, he said, only small actors. In other words, if you’d been chosen for Murder on the Orient Express, you were a good actor. It was quite an adjustment for all of us – except for Albert Finney, who had a tremendous amount to say, reams of dialogue. I remember it all being slightly tedious – except for lunchtimes, which were fascinating.
Published in 1934, Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express is a classic example of the locked room mystery-a trope of suspense fiction in which a crime is committed under seemingly impossible conditions. Here, as in all of Christie’s novels, the crime is murder, the victim an unknown passenger named Mr. Ratchett, stabbed twelve times, and the scene of the crime the claustrophobic sleeping berths of the Orient Express
