The quintet were headed into musical territories beyond simply "moon-June-bloom" and boy-meets-girl lyrics coupled with the tightly constructed vocal harmonies that had become their calling card.

The band did a lot of experimenting in those years, both in songwriting and arrangements. Some of it worked, some of it didn't. Butterfly" is often hailed as their finest and most consistent, whereas "Evolution" suffers from being anything but consistent. The songwriting is more or less on par with "Butterfly", but some arrangements in various degrees ruin the songs. Worst is the "underwater" effect put on Graham Nash's voice on "Lullaby to Tim"

Evolution was also the name of The Hollies' debut album for their new US label, Epic Records. But, like many American issues of British albums, this album was remixed using heavy echo and reverb. In addition, three songs were left off the album (with only "Carrie Anne" added), thus making the US version somewhat less desirable than its British counterpart. The cover shown is the US/Canadian cover, which used the same Karl Ferris photograph but differed from the UK cover by dispensing with The Fool's overall cover design. Instead, the US Canadian cover put The Hollies'.

The Hollies built their career by delivering some of the catchiest singles of the mid-1960s, but as the decade progressed, the band evolved, and the end result of this evolution was that The Hollies began to phase out the use of songs written by folks outside the band and stick to material composed by members of the band. As a result, by the time they released FOR CERTAIN BECAUS. n December 1966, every song on the album fit that criteria, as did the second album, which was – you guessed it – EVOLUTION.
