Pianist Wynton Kelly teams up with trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones for a fine, advanced hard bop date. There are four originals (all virtually forgotten decades later) by Kelly, Shorter and Morgan but it is the lone standard, a playful version of "June Night" (which has some puckish Morgan trumpet), that is the standout. At 35 minutes, this CD reissue of a former LP is pretty brief, but what is here on the formerly rare session should satisfy collectors of the style.

Wynton Charles Kelly (December 2, 1931 – April 12, 1971) was an American jazz pianist and composer. He is known for his lively, blues-based playing and as one of the finest accompanists in jazz. He began playing professionally at the age of 12, and was pianist on a No. 1 R&B hit at the age of 16. His recording debut as leader occurred three years later, around the time he started to become better known as accompanist to singer Dinah Washington, and as a member of trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie's band.

Wynton Kelly's lasting importance will be always be as a sideman - on classic Blue Note dates by Hank Mobley and Sonny Rollins, among countless other recorded appearances, and in the classic Miles Davis Quintet in the period following the release of Kind of Blue. In this role, Kelly consistently turned in great comping and solo work with inventive right-hand lines and a joyous, ringing quality to his playing. Willow Weep For Me" and "Old Clothes" are also great tunes; very earthy, very relaxed. Not a dull note is struck here, everything fits together in swinging fashion. It's funny how some albums and artists are so overshadowed by others; Kelly has crafted an album every bit as good as Sonny Clark's COOL STRUTTIN', yet I'm betting most people -even Jazz fans- are not familiar with KELLY BLUE.
