Randolph Denard Ornette Coleman (March 9 or 19, 1930 – June 11, 2015) was an American jazz saxophonist, violinist, trumpeter, and composer. In the 1960s, he was one of the founders of free jazz, a term he invented for his album Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation. His "Broadway Blues" and "Lonely Woman" have become standards and are cited as important early works in free jazz. His album Sound Grammar received the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for music.

Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation is the sixth album by jazz saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman, released on Atlantic Records in 1961, his fourth for the label. Its title established the name of the then-nascent free jazz movement. The recording session took place on December 21, 1960, at A&R Studios in New York City. The sole outtake from the album session, "First Take," was later released on the 1971 compilation Twins.

Quartet 1971 is a bootleg recording of a live performance in Berlin, and has also been issued by Unique Jazz under the title European Concert. It's a superb performance, featuring compositions from the late '60s and early '70s recorded on albums like Crisis and Science Fiction. In fact, the version of "Rock the Clock," one of Coleman's wilder songs, is arguably superior to the official one on the latter album.
