About rustin man (official). New album Drift Code released 1st February 2019. The album with Beth Gibbons didn’t take as long as ‘Drift Code’ to make, but still took a good few years to write and record. We lived quite a distance apart, so we got into the habit of going through ideas down the phone. Our conversations would often go on for an hour or two, and touched on many topics.
Also known as. Rustin Man. Born. 1962-01-16) 16 January 1962 (age 57) Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England. Webb played bass for Talk Talk until 1988. His composition "Another Word" from the album The Party's Over is the only Talk Talk song not written or co-written by vocalist Mark Hollis. In the early 1990s, he and Harris formed. In the early 2000s, he adopted the name "Rustin Man" and collaborated with Beth Gibbons on Out of Season (2002) His second album under the Rustin Man moniker, Drift Code, was released on 1 February 2019 on Domino.
All in all, the album is a genial bird’s eye view of life presented in aphorism, perspectives from a man well aware of his aging and embracing it. There’s something joyful even in the moments of tension, as if their eventual dissipation is a given.

Seventeen years after former Talk Talk bassist Paul Webb made his first record as Rustin Man – Out of Season, with Beth Gibbons – he’s finally putting out a solo album. Apparently he wanted to learn the assorted instruments he plays on it well enough to be comfortable recording himself, and had to build up the arrangements as his capabilities increased. Each instrument’s contribution to the album was recorded in turn, rather than track by track, yet it sounds like an organic whole. In fact, it sounds magnificent. Drift Code has sturdy songs, which are in turn given a patina of age by the way Webb has recorded them. It’s not so much that something like Our Tomorrows sounds as if it could have been recorded in 1971, more that it seems to exist in a time of its own. Occasionally, one is reminded of Broadcast at their most pastoral, for that same determination to find or found some timeless folk tradition of their own.
Drift Code is the second album from Rustin Man (aka Paul Webb), following his 2002 collaboration with Beth Gibbons. Recorded at his Essex home, a converted barn three miles from the nearest village, the record has a warm, wise kind of euphoria to it, coupled with an acute sense of storytelling and surreality. Former Talk Talk bassist Paul Webb finally steps to the microphone on his first album in 16 years, a meticulously arranged wonder steeped in English folk and proggy vibes
