Gil Fuller & the Monterey Jazz Festival Orchestra featuring Dizzy Gillespie is an album by composer, arranger and conductor Gil Fuller featuring trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie recorded in 1965 and originally released on the Pacific Jazz label. The album was rereleased on CD combined with Fuller's Night Flight (Pacific Jazz, 1965) on the Blue Note label as Gil Fuller & the Monterey Jazz Festival Orchestra featuring Dizzy Gillespie & James Moody in 2008.

By 1965, Dizzy wasn’t working with Fuller in an official capacity; the trumpeter toured and recorded on his own while the West Coast-based arranger headed up an organization called the Monterey Jazz Festival Orchestra. In addition to playing that year’s festival, the group also managed to bang out two studio albums featuring Dizzy and tenor saxophonist James Moody - another Gillespie big band alumnus who worked under Fuller in the ‘40s. A few of the tracks, however, detract somewhat from the proceedings. The album contains a small amount of soul-jazz or boogaloo numbers ( Be’s That Way, Sweets For My Sweet, ) that seem to have been selected for no reason other than to make a seemingly obligatory acknowledgement of the direction jazz had begun to take in the commercial arena, circa 1965.

For this studio session, Dizzy Gillespie was reunited with arranger Gil Fuller who that year led a specially assembled big band for the Monterey Jazz Festival. A bit of a disappointment, this CD failed to generate the fireworks one might expect. There are some good moments, most notably on "The Shadow of Your Smile," "Groovin' High" and "Things Are Here" (the answer to "Things to Come") but the big band is mostly heard from in a purely accompanying role behind the great trumpeter and little interplay occurs.
