Well-known for the highly political and emotional lyrics of vocalist Rio Reiser, they became a musical mouthpiece of new left movements, such as the squatting movement, during that time in Germany and their hometown of West Berlin in particular.

Ton Steine Scherben (Literal English translation: "Clay Stones Shards" or "Sound Stones Shards") were a German Anarchist rock band formed in 1970 in West Berlin, Germany when the members were all around 20 years of age. Singer Rio Reiser usually told journalists the name was taken from a description by pioneer archeologist Heinrich Schliemann of what he saw when he first came to the site of ancient Troy.

IV (Ton Steine Scherben album). IV is a double album released by Ton Steine Scherben. Because of the black album cover, it is also referred to as die Schwarze ("the black one"). Hearing this record in Eastern Bloc in 1998 totally blew me away. I'd had quite high hopes for it anyway, but it managed to exceed them. Beginning with a mid tempo kick, the head destroying sagezahn bassline quickly fades up and promptly funks the freak out of you. This continues with some great frequency changes snaking their way round, before fading out leaving the kick alone again. The other side isn't as immediate, but is still some good dancefloor fodder.
