Rickey Woodard is a big-toned, hard-edged tenor sax man in the mode of Gene Ammons, Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins flowing, blusey manner with a rich sound. I think that gets it just about right. On "Yazoo," Mr Woodard is joined by trumpeter Ray Brown - and they are backed by the great bop pianist Cedar Walton with bassist Jeff Littleton and Ralph Penland at the drum kit. All of these musicians are top-shelf guys, and there's great "interplay" between Mr Woodard and Mr Brown. If you like your jazz in the main stream with a blues chaser, Rickey Woodard's "Yazoo" is right up your alley. The sonics are up to Concord's usual standards: clear and clean with a little warmth and plenty of instrumental separation.
