Boogie is a compilation album of both previously released and unreleased tracks by American band The Jackson 5. It was released on January 16, 1979, after the release of the Jacksons studio album Destiny a month earlier. Boogie is considered the rarest of all Jackson 5/Jacksons releases, as not many albums were pressed and fewer were sold at the time. In 1979, the Jacksons moved up in the Top 10 with the album Destiny, released by Epic, and the hit "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)".

Boogie Woogie (album). Boogie-woogie music was enjoying a surge in popularity in the 1930s and 40s. Record producer John Hammond invited Johnson and Turner to New York to appear at Carnegie Hall along with Ammons and Lewis in the first "From Spirituals to Swing" concert held on December 23, 1938. Count Basie, who was leading a quintet and sextet as well as his big band, also performed at the concert. On December 30, 1938, the three pianists cut the two-sided "Boogie Woogie Prayer" for Vocalion Records; Lewis recorded "Bear Cat Crawl" on the same date, and Ammons recorded the flip side, "Shout for Joy," two days later. The December 30, 1938 session also yielded Turner and Johnson's first record, "Roll 'Em Pete," backed with "Goin' Away Blues.

Boogie-woogie is a music genre that became popular during the late 1920s, developed in African-American communities in the 1870s. It was eventually extended from piano, to piano duo and trio, guitar, big band, country and western music, and gospel. While the blues traditionally expresses a variety of emotions, boogie-woogie is mainly associated with dancing. The 1919 recordings (two takes) of "Weary Blues" by the Louisiana Five contained the same boogie-woogie bass figure as appears in the 1915 "Weary Blues" sheet music by Artie Matthews

As a concept album about a modern messiah, The Ballad of Boogie Christ sees Joseph Arthur falter at points and soar at others, leaving it overall a very good addition to his discography, but likely not to go down in the upper tier of his best recordings. The record's second half is the weaker of the two sides, but it has plenty of good tunes. It's OK to be Young/Gone" features subdued verses that explode into a rocking mantra of the repeated title, championing freedom and, perhaps, reincarnation. With these pros and cons weighed against each other, The Ballad of Boogie Christ remains a very good Joseph Arthur record, but it lacks the immediate virtues of his greatest albums.
