The self-deprecating title conveys something of what made . different from the ossified 1980s rock scene in which they began. But not only did they change the course of rock music; they also sustained an inspired creativity for almost two decades, something that the career arc of this retrospective brings into focus, right down to the Bacharach-esque touches of the final unreleased tracks, which pleasingly bring things full-circle in certain ways.

The album is a 40-song career-spanning retrospective that collects, for the first time ever, songs from . s entire back catalog, including the pioneering American band's years on both the IRS label (1982 to 1987) and Warner Bros. Records (1988 to 2011). In addition to liner notes written by band members Berry, Buck, Mills, and Stipe, the album also features three new songs that .

Again, if there’s something perversely admirable in the band’s decision not to sweep their lesser material under the rug, they make Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage, much like . s career, go out with a whimper.

Those who depend on Part Lies to learn about . will miss other crucial defining characteristics. The band believed in the notion of the album, and crafted listening experiences in which songs fit together in tight, Escher-like clusters. song was a killer, but an astounding number of them are vibrant and rich in instrumental details, and resonate wonderfully in the context of an album side.
